Sociology Alum Says ‘All Good’ in First Year as Principal

The Tampa Tribune featured Ohio University alum Mary (Salisbury) Freitas ’91, ’93M in a story on “It’s ‘all good’ at Lennard High during principal’s first year.”

Freitas earned a bachelor’s in advertising from Scripps College of Communication and an M.A. in Sociology from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University. She is the principal at Lennard High School in Florida.

“It’s challenging with 2,000 students but rewarding,” Freitas said. “The support from teachers – and a positive culture – allows our kids to feel safe and flourish.”
Lennard High School opened in 2007, and Freitas joined the school in 2012 as assistant principal of curriculum. Last year she was promoted to principal when her predecessor, Craig Horstman moved on to a district position.

Raised on a dairy farm in rural Stockdale, Ohio, Freitas said “there was no way” she would follow in the footsteps of her father, a high school principal, and her librarian mother. Graduating in 1991 from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, with a masters in sociology, Freitas originally went to work in marketing. Feeling unfulfilled and cold, Freitas moved south for the warmer climate.

“Have you ever lived in Ohio in the winter?” she said, smiling.
