In 2013 Professors Ernst Breitenberger and Louis E Wright each contributed $7,500 toward the initiation of an endowment fund to support the Graduate Program in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Many friends and alumni contributed to help reach the goal of $25,000 which is the amount required to create an Endowment Fund.
To reach the goal more quickly, Professor Wright proposed a matching challenge grant up to $3,000 in the Spring of 2014. The challenge was matched within a couple of months, so the Breitenberger/Wright Graduate Endowment Fund now exists.
The annual earnings from the endowment will be allocated for support of Physics & Astronomy graduate students by the department chair, according to recommendations from the department’s Graduate Committee.
Funds will be used for purposes such as supporting graduate-student travel, providing graduate students with equipment (or software) needed to pursue their research, and providing special awards to outstanding students. We encourage friends and alumni, particularly graduate alumni, to continue to give generously so we can honor the contributions of Drs. Breitenberger and Wright.
