Ohio University alum Shea Daniels ’12 has been awarded a National Board for Certified Counselors Foundation scholarship created to encourage students from rural areas to practice close to home, reports the Chillicothe Gazette.
Daniels earned a B.A. in English—Creative Writing from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University.
The $5,000 scholarship award was presented to Shea Daniels, who by accepting it commits to practice in rural areas after finishing her course of study.
The mission of the NBCC Foundation is to leverage the power of counseling by strategically focusing resources for positive change. The Foundation created the rural scholarship in 2009 to improve access to counseling services in rural communities, which suffer disproportionately from a lack of mental health care. Nearly 40 students from across the country applied for the five 2015 rural scholarships that were awarded.
As a rural scholarship recipient, Daniels will receive $5,000 to support her counseling education and recognize her commitment to the under-served. A graduate of Ohio University in Athens, Daniels is currently a master’s student in the school and clinical mental health counseling programs at Ohio University-Chillicothe. To serve the most at-risk and vulnerable youth in Ohio’s Appalachia, she has chosen to pursue counseling and remain in her community.
The scholarship, according to the NBCC, will help her become the kind of qualified, specially trained mental health practitioner who can make a positive difference for the youth of the region.
