Advising Tip for Transitioning Seniors Heading to ‘Real World’

By Sara Berens

Sarah-BerensAs we are now under a month away from commencement, this week’s advising tip is dedicated to all of our graduating seniors. In a few short weeks you will be heading out into the “real world” (I think I just heard a collective gasp), so now is the time to start getting prepared if you haven’t already.

Here are just a few suggestions to help make the transition easier:

  • Go over your resume with a fine tooth comb and sign up for a mock interview. Both can be done at the Career and Leadership Development Center.
  • Be sure that you understand how your financial obligations will work. This means any loans or borrowed money. Meet with your financial aid officer if need be.
  • Sign up for the Alumni Association and Bobcat Career Link.
  • Have a conversation with Professors and Advisers about utilizing them as references in the future. Be sure to get their preferred title and contact information, and save all of them in one document.
  • Talk to your support system about what your plans are after graduation and how you intend on carrying them out.
  • Clean up your social media pages. Employers look you up online more than you think they do.
  • Take time to visit the places on campus and in Athens that you’ve been meaning to over the past four years. Take a lot of selfies.
  • Take a deep breath. Better yet, take three.
