The Ohio University War and Peace theme is co-sponsoring an Africa & War and Peace Lecture Series with the African Studies Program and the Institute for the African Child.
On Wednesday, March 25, between noon and 1 p.m. in Baker 231, Ohio University alum Siphokazi Magadla examines the state assisted integration of female ex-combatants into civilian life in post-apartheid South Africa. The findings are based on life histories that conducted between 2013 and 2014 with women who participated in various non-statutory forces aligned to the liberation movements during the anti-apartheid struggle. This study seeks to make visible the ways in which the state-led demobilization process reflected these nuances and how attention to these factors determined which women could participate in the process of state assisted integration.
Magadla is a lecturer and a Ph.D. candidate in the Political and International Studies Department at Rhodes University, South Africa. She holds a master’s degree in International Studies from Ohio University. In 2014, she published her first book, a co-edited volume with Professor Leonhard Praeg, Ubuntu: Curating the archive (University of KwaZulu-Natal Press, 2014).
