Café Conversations: The Age of Reagan and Madonna, Feb. 11

Café Conversations presents Dr. Chester Pach on “The Age of Reagan and Madonna” on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 5 p.m. in the Baker Center Front Room.

Madonna and President Reagan have little in common except for their influence on the 1980s. Pach, Associate Professor of History, discusses how these two historical figures defined this time period. Pach teaches courses in U.S. foreign relations and recent U.S. history.

CafeConversation“They’re obviously very different individuals. There’s no evidence that they ever met or had any interaction, but in many ways they represent important parts of the ’80s. The way I’m going to bring them together is Reagan and Madonna were effective in communicating because of how they presented their views through use of images and words,” Pach says.

Many of Reagan’s policies and ideas were popular because he advocated restoring traditional values and reviving U.S. power. Reagan was president for most of the decade, and he represented the growth of conservative views. In contrast, music pop icon Madonna addressed feminist issues, although in controversial ways, and sometimes turned gender stereotypes inside out. Madonna was popular because of her image and her music videos. Together she and Reagan helped define the 1980s.

Watch on A&S TV.

The event will be live-streamed on Wednesday and archived, and the online audience is invited to submit questions.

Café events are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Both cafés are venues for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting. The Science Cafe is hosted by Dr. Sarah Wyatt, Professor of Environmental & Plant Biology and Vice President of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi. The two series are sponsored by the Ohio University chapter of Sigma Xi and the Office of the Vice President for Research. Find the Science Café on Facebook and Twitter.
