Nell Irvin Painter

A leading American historian and an award-winning scholar, Painter is best known for her seven books and numerous articles on the history of the American South in the 19th century. Her most recent books include The History of White People, Creating Black Americans and Southern History Across the Color Line.

Painter explores issues of racial and gender identity and how they have figured into the history of America and the West. Drawing from her extensive scholarly studies and her more recent study of visual art, Painter examines different time periods, locations and individuals throughout Western civilization, bringing America’s rich cultural history to life on stage. Her informative and thought-provoking program urges the audience to look at history beyond the lines of difference and stereotype – to literally look at her images as well – sparking a discourse that continues well after she has left the stage.

Painter is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has served as president of the Organization of American Historians and the Southern Historical Association. A doctoral graduate of Harvard University, she is also the Edwards Professor Emerita of American History at Princeton University.

Established in 1962 by a gift from Ohio University alumni and stalwart supporters Edwin L. and Ruth Kennedy, the Kennedy Lecture Series aims to bring speakers who appeal to a broad cross-section of the OHIO community to the Athens Campus to discuss significant issues in American life.

All Kennedy Lecture Series presentations are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for each program.
