Spring-Summer Internship Available with Marion Correctional TEDx

Throughout this semester, the OHIO Center for Law, Justice & Culture has been cultivating a partnership with the Institute for Responsible Re-Entry at Marion Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison north of Columbus. This partnership has grown out of the Critical Resistance to Mass Incarceration series focusing on the U.S. criminal justice system. Some of the re-entry facilitators and mentors at Marion visited Ohio University in October to speak on a panel titled “Re-Entry in the Era of Mass Incarceration.”

TEDX-Marion-logoAs a part of this new and emerging partnership, the CLJC is seeking an undergraduate intern to work on prisoner re-entry with the Marion Correctional Institution TEDx Program in Spring or Summer 2015. The internship focuses on project coordination, public relations, and event planning.

The student intern could carry out much of the work remotely from the Athens campus, with a weekly or biweekly trip to Marion to work directly with TEDx participants. Students can receive credit hours for participation in the internship.

Students who are interested in learning more about this position are encouraged to contact Dr. Haley Duschinski, the Director of the Center for Law, Justice & Culture, at duschins@ohio.edu.

Marion Correctional’s TEDx events take place approximately every month, and they were the first such events held inside an adult male prison. They bring together speakers and audience members from both inside and outside the walls for a full day of engagement, interaction, expression, and communication. The events are are broadcast from Marion Correctional Institution.

The TEDx program helps communities, organizations, and individuals produce TED-style events at the local level, in the spirit of TED’s mission, “Ideas worth spreading.” TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis, under a free license from TED.

Begun in 2011, Marion Correction’s TEDx program has been presenting powerful ideas out into the world for more than three years. Past themes include “A Life Worth Living?” in September 2012 and “What’s Next?” in April 2013. These events are designed to give a multitude of perspectives and ideas worth spreading concerning the experience of incarceration, rehabilitation, and reintegration. All events are broadcast and archived online.
