Southeast Asia Lecture: ‘1819: Isa Kamari on the Foundation of Singapore,’ Nov. 5

Dr. Harry Aveling gives a lecture on  “1819: Isa Kamari on the Foundation of Singapore” on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 12:55 p.m. in the Friends of the Library Room.

This lecture is free and open to the public and serves those interested in in southeast Asian literature, southeast Asian studies, anthropology, linguistics, literature, interdisciplinary arts, media studies, history, and other related fields.

Aveling is Adjunct Professor of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Monash University in Victoria, Australia. Since 2002, Aveling has served Ohio University as a Visiting Professor of Linguistics and Southeast Asian Studies and a Distinguished Visiting Professor. In 2007, he was appointed to the Center for International Studies’ Global Adjunct Faculty in the area of Southeast Asian Literature.

An internationally recognized authority on Indonesian and Malay literature and translation studies, Aveling has been honored repeatedly for his translations of numerous works into English and lectured and has taught in Australia, Southeast Asia, and the United States.

During his visit, Professor Aveling will present a talk entitled “1819: Isa Kamari on the Foundation of Singapore” (abstract attached).  In addition he will be available to visit classes, including ANTH 3850/5850: Cultures of Southeast Asia and HIST 3451/ 5451: Southeast Asia, c. 1750-1945, and to meet with students one-on-one.

Abstract: Internationally recognized authority on Indonesian and Malay literature and translation studies.  He has been honored repeatedly for his translations of numerous works into English and lectured and taught in Australia, Southeast Asia, and the United States.  Since 2002, Professor Aveling has served Ohio University as Visiting Professor of Linguistics and Southeast Asian Studies, Winter Quarter 2002, 2004, 2007; Spring Quarter, 2009; Spring Semester, 2013, and Distinguished Visiting Professor, Spring Quarter, 2011.  In 2007, he was appointed to the Center for International Studies’ Global Adjunct Faculty in the area of Southeast Asian Literature.  Over the course of his affiliation with Ohio University, Professor Aveling has taught courses, guided independent studies and served on a number of graduate committees, both on campus and “at distance” over the internet, something that he continues to do through the present. Since the full retirement from the Department of Linguistics of Professor Richard McGinn, specialist in Southeast Asian literature, Professor Aveling has filled a gap in this critical area within Southeast Asian Studies.
