Butterfield is Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy and Physics at Trinity College at the University of Cambridge.

This talk will give a philosopher’s review of the notions of particle and wave, as they occur in both classical mechanics and quantum mechanics. Among the philosophical themes will be: whether the identity of particles is in some sense primitive (haecceitism), whether mass is an intrinsic property of particles, and whether forces are determined by the state of matter.

The lecture is presented by the Ohio University Philosophy Department and the Spetnagel Fund.
