Assembly line packing at SE Ohio Food Bank

A group of CAS 1410: Food Matters! students and faculty spent their Saturday morning volunteering alongside other community and Ohio University groups Jan. 21 at the Southeast Ohio Food Bank in Logan, OH.

The group worked in an efficient assembly line packing boxes of dry goods and learning about issues of food insecurity in Appalachia.

This field trip took place within the Community Food System module of the CAS 1410: Food Matters! multidisciplinary course that is the introductory course to the Food Studies Theme.

This module featured guest lectures by Amy Renner (of the SE Ohio Food Bank), Mary Nally (Director of Community Food Initiatives), Sherri Oliver (Executive Director of Live Healthy Appalachia), and Ruth Dudding (of the Athens County Health Department).

The SE Ohio Food Bank supplies over 70 food pantries and soup kitchens in its 10-county, Southeastern Ohio region. It also distributes boxes of food to families and seniors in need, as well as various summer lunch programs and others, all addressing food insecurity in the region.
