Students in a poetry course associated with the War & Peace curricular theme organized a local celebration as part of a worldwide day of recognition for the poet, teacher and peace activist William Stafford and his centennial year on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The ENG 3620: 104 Creative Writing Poetry Workshop are wrestling with defining “Service/Serving” in their own terms this semester, and they will be helping out with this day as readers, organizers, etc. Their events are part of a worldwide celebration of Stafford’s work in 2014. The course is taught by Becca J.R. Lachman.
The events included:
- 2 p.m. Guided meditation on community and creativity, Inhale Yoga teachers (Alden Library, Friends of the Library Room, 319) Free
- 2:20-3:50 p.m. Stafford-inspired generative poetry workshop for all ages, led by writer and Ph.D. candidate Brad Modlin (Alden 319) Free
- 4-5 p.m. Film showing and talk-back: “Every War Has Two Losers” about Stafford’s time serving in WWII alternative service work camps and Civilian Public Service (Alden 319) Free
- 7:30-9 p.m. Reading/storytelling at ARTS/West (Poems by Stafford or inspired by Stafford + poems from the new anthology A Ritual to Read Together: Poems in Conversation with William Stafford) + remembering the International Day of Peace, $5 suggested donation at door to support ARTS/West
