Ohio University alum Joe B. Harford ’73 received the Medal of Merit at the annual Alumni Awards Gala on Homecoming Weekend.
The Medal of Merit is awarded to alumni who have achieved distinction in their chosen fields.
Harford is senior project officer at the Center for Global Health within the National Cancer Institute. During his 18 years with NCI, he served for more than a decade as director of the Office of International Affairs, the forerunner of the Center for Global Health, and he also served as the associate director for Special Projects and chief of staff for the Office of the NCI Director.
Prior to joining the National Cancer Institute in 1996, Harford served as chief scientist for RiboGene Inc. and is the co-inventor on two issued U.S. patents related to drug discovery. He has published more than 130 scientific papers and is a 2013 recipient of the American Association for Cancer Education’s highest honor, the Margaret Hay Edwards Achievement Medal in recognition of international education activities.
Harford earned a B.S. in 1973 from the College of Arts & Sciences. He and his wife, Dr. Esther Chang, have one daughter, Leah.
