I’m Sean Demme and I am currently a Horticulture Intern at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Clermont, KY. My first couple days here were wildly exciting as this is my very first internship. The first order of business was meeting the people and moving into my new desk:
The first day was mostly ‘day-one paperwork’ so I was eager to get my hands on the first task that Bernheim had for me.
After getting a tour of the arboretum and seeing the wonderful, historic collections here, I was asked to do what’s referred to as “What’s in Bloom?” This is where a horticulture technician or intern goes around various sections of the park and picks plants that are in bloom to go on display in the visitors center at Bernheim. The plants on display are labeled by their common and scientific names. Luckily each plant has a tag with its scientific name to help identify and learn of the flora in the park.
(This is an example of one of the plant tags including the scientific name.)
The picture below helps to show what the ”What’s in Bloom?” display looks like at the visitors center and also wraps up what my first couple days included. Thank you for reading and look for my next post moving onward with my experience here at The Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest.
