Dr. Jaclyn Maxwell, Associate Professor of History with a joint appointment in Classics & World Religions, will provide historical commentary as a study leader for a Smithsonian Journey cruise to the ancient windswept islands of Greece and the fabled coast of Turkey in September.
Participants will visit “some of the classic Greek islands, including Delos, the paramount religious sanctuary of the ancient Greek world; Mykonos, known for its iconic windmills; Santorini, with villages that perch above the volcanic caldera; Rhodes, featuring sites associated with the Knights Templar; and Patmos, with its Monastery of St. John. Along the Turkish coast, ports of call include Ephesus, the most spectacularly preserved Greco-Roman city in the world with marble-paved boulevards, and legendary Troy, boasting myriad layers of archeological marvels,” according to the Smithsonian Journey website.
During the summer of 2011, she was invited by Smithsonian Journeys to work as a study leader for a two-week trip to eastern Turkey called “Ancient Worlds of Anatolia.” She presented lectures on history, archaeology and religion related to the cities and archaeological sites visited on the trip.
