The Spanish section of the Department of Modern Languages presents
The 18th Annual Spanish and Latin American Studies Spring Colloquium form Thursday, March 27, through Saturday, March 29.
The colloquium’s mission, since its inception in 1996, is the promotion of Hispanic artistic and cultural awareness as well as the showcasing of creative and scholarly talent.
Some of the authors, artists and scholars that have previously visited include Mempo Giardinelli, Alicia Kozameh, Efrain Barradas, Luzma Umpierre, David William Foster, Rosa Montero, Clara Sánchez, Renée Ferrer, Francisco Alarcón and Roberto Fernández of international and national prominence.
The theme for this year is Editors, Creative Writers and Translators. How do they make it all happen?
Poet and translator Mariela Dreyfus from the New York University, Creative Writing in Spanish Program, as well as editors and creative writers Carlos Roberto Gómez (Isla Negra) and Sergio Arlandis (Anthropos), from Puerto Rico and Spain respectively, will talk about the complexities of running publishing houses and creative writing programs, and how writers contribute to their success.
This year, the Colloquium has also combined with the Kennedy Art Museum to showcase a number of book covers celebrating 22 years of Isla Negra Editores existence.
Thursday evening at the Kennedy Art Museum there will be a formal presentation of the book covers, followed by the guests reading from their works.
The Colloquium will also host a creative writing workshop on Saturday.
Faculty, students, staff and the community are welcome to join all activities.
