Libraries Hosts Distinguished Professor Dr. Tom Carpenter

By Jen Doyle

Ohio University’s Distinguished Professors spend so much time with the Libraries’ resources, it’s only fitting that their portraits take up residence at Alden Library.

Each year, Ohio University honors a professor who has demonstrated exemplary research and teaching with its highest distinction for faculty members, the Distinguished Professor Award, and the Libraries commemorates the achievement with a portrait in its third floor gallery. The tradition continues this year with the addition of a photograph of 2013 Distinguished Professor Dr. Tom Carpenter.

On Monday, February 24th, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of Alden Library, President Roderick J. McDavis and Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benot cordially invite the public to attend a reception held in honor of Dr. Carpenter, director of the Ping Institute and a professor in Classics specializing in Greek archaeology, religion and iconography.

The evening begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m, followed by a 7:00 p.m. portrait unveiling and lecture by Dr. Carpenter titled “Greek Tragedy Amongst the ‘Barbarians’ in 4th Century B.C. Italy.”

“As the audience will see, my use of the term ‘barbarian’ is mildly ironic,” Carpenter said. “I hope people will come away knowing something they didn’t know before.”
