The Ohio Center for Ecology & Evolutionary Studies presents Dr. Michael Webster with the 2014 DARWIN LECTURE on Monday Feb. 17, at 4:30 p.m. in the Baker Center Theater.
Webster, Professor and Robert G. Engel Professor of Ornithology at Cornell University, will discuss “Darwin & Misperceptions: What Evolution Isn’t.”
In Webster’s lab, “We study animal social behavior from an evolutionary perspective, particularly focusing on the processes and outcomes of sexual selection. Our work is integrative, in that we examine issues from both ultimate and proximate perspectives. This research combines intensive fieldwork with genetic, hormonal and other analyses in the lab, to unlock the secret lives of birds and other taxa.” Read more.
Also, Webster will lead a Biological Sciences & Biomedical Sciences Seminar on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. in Irvine 159. He will discuss “Sexual Selection and Speciation in an Australian Bird.”
Darwin Lecture Abstract: Evolution is a key building block of modern biology yet it is not accepted by most Americans. Dr. Webster will address misunderstandings about what evolutionary biology is and isn’t that fuel the debate over “intelligent design” and that are often echoed in the media.
