“The fourth annual Battle of the Tongues Food Drive helped Ohio University’s Department of Modern Languages raise a collective total of more than 10,000 cans for local food banks,” writes Post reporter Zane Parsons.
The food drive, held between Oct. 14 and Nov. 4, benefits three local organizations — The United Campus Ministry, Good Works Inc., and the Athens County Food Pantry….
Last year, about 132,900 pounds of food were received, which benefitted about 4,120 households, according to a representative from the Athens County Food Pantry.
The Battle of the Tongues Food Drive was a competition between all of the classes in the Department of Modern Languages….
“Student involvement is very high. Everyone seems to be very passionate and enthusiastic about helping the community,” said Dr. Mary Jane Kelley, Associate Professor of Spanish and the 2013 food drive organizer.
The Business German class was declared the winner, donating the most food items for the drive. All together the drive collected about 1,000 items this year bringing the total amount of food donated by the students of Modern Languages to more than 10,600 items since 2010.
“There is a constant need in Southeast Ohio that is not going away, also students are learning values and important skills that will carry on with them after they leave Ohio University,” said Adi King, professor and founder of the Battle of the Tongues food drive.
