Ohio University alum Dr. Ronald L. Lewis ’66 has written the contemporary history of West Virginia University, where he taught history until his retirement in 2008. His newly released book is Aspiring to Greatness: West Virginia University since World War II.
Lewis earned a B.A. in Political Science from the College of Arts & Sciences and a Ph.D. from the University of Akron.
“The current history of West Virginia University only comes into the 1970s, and so much has happened since then,” Lewis told Daily Athenaeum reporter Caroline Peters.
“Women’s movements, civil rights and other occurrences needed to be covered and previous documents containing information had all been written too close to these times.”
Lewis served as a professor at WVU from 1985 until his retirement in 2008. During his career at WVU, Lewis served as department chair of WVU’s Department of History for six years. After his service as a department chair, Lewis was appointed Eberly Family Professor of History….
“I spent six years preparing this book, so I’m excited to share it with everyone. What I found most interesting to talk about are the historical aspects of self governance,” Lewis said. “Especially because West Virginia University had the struggle to achieve this for so many years.
