Faculty Calls for Colleagues to be ‘Significant Presence’ on Court Street

Dear Colleagues,

I know that many of us have had a strong reaction to the tragic events on Court Street during Homecoming. As a result of those events and the university’s constant cry for “safety” this Halloween, I have decided to put my feet where my mouth is so to speak. I ask you to do the same.

The university has called officially for volunteers to be out and about Saturday night. I think we need to go one step further. We need to be a significant presence on Court Street this Halloween and I am asking for your help as members of this community. Let’s not be bystanders. As a faculty we have numbers on our side. 100 of us joining the fray, being visible, and talking to students, could make a significant difference and can change the mood of the party.

Those faculty, et al, willing to do more than just talk about a change in the Halloween scene should meet at court st coffee at 10:30 p.m. We can break up into pairs or small groups from there and help canvas Court Street and its environs. We look to join the President and Provost in their efforts.

We can do something to alter the environment of binge drinking and rape culture this year. If we want them to be safe and take care of one another, let’s show them we mean it.

Boots on the Ground!
